As part of the fun process of promoting "Flavor Profile of a Smuggler," my sci-fi lesbian erotica story set on a space ship (because when I think coffee shop + erotica, I think sci-fi lesbian erotica set on a space ship, apparently), I got to interview Owen James Franks, author of the delightfully fun "...And Friday is Formal Day."
Me: I read your "About the Author" to get a sense of you before I started writing interview questions, and I noticed that this is your first published story. What was it about the prompt Victoria posted, about erotica set in or around a coffee shop, that tickled your fancy?
Owen: By day I'm a game developer. By night I'm a gamer. By both I drink a lot of coffee, and this prompt sounded like a lot of fun, especially when it was pitched to me over a few espresso martinis.
Me: Are there more fiction projects in the works for you? Erotic? Non-erotic?
Owen: Definitely! Nothing I can announce yet, but I'm working on both some erotic and non-erotic stories that I'm hoping will see publishing sometime in 2016.
Me: Tell us about your day job! Have you ever served coffee in a speedo, like the hero of your tale?
Owen: Nothing nearly that exciting. I work in an office testing software all day. But the idea for the story came from the number of bikini barista stands I drive by on my commute, combined with a standing joke between my wife and me that if the whole "software developer" thing doesn't work out, we should open a speedo barista stand like the one in the story to give the ladies a little equal time for all the bikini stands around the Northwest.
Me: What was your favorite part of writing "...And Friday is Formal Day"?
Owen: The copious amounts of research I needed to do to get the details right? I'm kidding, the writing process, and the constraints of writing an erotic story, were a lot of fun, and an interesting set of challenges from the usual non-erotic sci-fi stories I like to write.
Me: And finally--how do you like your coffee?
Owen: When I'm making it for myself, it's a black, coldbrew. When I'm ordering from a stand, it's a double 12oz mocha with whip cream.
Thanks for talking to me Owen. You all should check out his story in Coffee: Hot, it's as delicious as iced coffee on a viciously warm day. And of course, you can find my own "Flavor Profile of a Smuggler" in the same anthology.
Finally, if you want to talk to all the authors in Coffee: Hot, we'll be hosting a Google Hangout on August 16th, Sunday, at 7pm PST. Come visit us! God knows what a bunch of erotica writers will get up to if you leave us all on our own.
I bet it'll be worth its own anthology, though...
